Test Your English

Why not have a go at this online test and see how well you can do? It's difficult in places but some questions are easier. And before you ask... no, you can't translate the test into your own language!

The Test

There are twenty five questions in this test, divided into five sections. Each question is worth one point; so the maximum is 25 points. When you have finished the test and are happy with your answers, click on the "Check Your Answers" button and our website will mark your test for you and give you a mark out of twenty five as well as a percentage.

Part 1 - Prepositions

Complete the following sentences with a preposition.

Example: I will leave England in August.

  1. Mozart was born Salzburg in 1756.
  2. I'm going to meet Peter Tuesday.
  3. I don't often go out the week.
  4. Hamlet is a play William Shakespeare.
  5. It is traditional to eat Turkey Christmas.
Part 2 - Tenses

Change the tense of the verb in the following sentences so that it is grammatically correct. You may have to add auxiliary verbs.

Example: I haven't been to London yet.

  1. I the film at all - it was boring!
  2. Be quiet! I to the radio.
  3. My friends for me when I arrived at the airport.
  4. You look exhausted! hard?.
  5. We're late! The film by the time we get to the cinema.
Part 3 - Verb Patterns

Choose the correct alternative from the drop-down box in each sentence.

Example: I really enjoy meeting new people.

  2. If you hadn't asked him so nicely, he wouldn't have agreed you.
  3. Would you mind with me to the dentist tomorrow?
  4. Don't forget some milk on your way home tonight.

Part 4 - The Passive

In the following sentences you must use the auxiliary verb (be) and change the main verb (given below) so that the sentences are passive.

Example: The thief was arrested by the police.

  3. Have you to the wedding?
  4. The room should yesterday.
  5. A lot of work at the moment.
Part 5 - Auxiliary Verbs

You must use an auxiliary verb to finish the following sentences.

Example: I didn't like the food very much.

  1. I wasn't hungry but my friends .
  2. I like hot weather but John .
  3. I wish I play an instrument.
  4. I can't believe you been to London yet!
  5. By the time I arrived, the lesson already started.
